When people hear “entrepreneurship for kids”, they often think it is about money. It is really about something simpler: noticing a problem, making something that helps, and showing it to real people. Children can learn these things early, and they learn them best by doing.
What children learn from entrepreneurship
- Creativity: turning an idea into something real.
- Communication: explaining an idea clearly and listening to feedback.
- Money sense: understanding cost, price and saving.
- Problem-solving: trying again when the first plan does not work.
- Confidence: speaking to customers, teachers and mentors.
These skills help in school and in life, whether or not a child ever runs a business as an adult.
Five small steps a child can try
- Spot a problem. Look around at home, in school or in the neighbourhood. What is difficult, boring or missing?
- Think of an idea. Write down three ways to solve it. Pick the simplest one.
- Make a small first version. A handmade sample, a drawing or a single batch is enough to begin.
- Show it to real people. Ask family, neighbours or classmates what they like and what they would change.
- Improve and try again. Use what you heard to make the next version better.
Real examples from Ishkol students
At Ishkol, students in the Young Entrepreneurs Launchpad learn business by building one. A teenage founder took a healthy snack brand, SehatSe, from an idea to launch, including its website. Our youngest founder learned branding, packaging and selling by creating his own soap brand, Chhote Ustad Soap.
Neither of them started with a perfect plan. They started with a small first step, and learned at each stage with guidance from mentors.
How parents can help
- Let them try. A small project that does not go well still teaches a lot.
- Ask questions instead of giving answers. “Who is this for?” “What will it cost to make?”
- Keep it small and safe. Begin with family and people you know, with an adult involved in any buying or selling.
- Celebrate the effort. Praise the work, the learning and the courage, not only the sales.
Learning with Ishkol
The Young Entrepreneurs Launchpad is Ishkol’s flagship programme for practical entrepreneurship. Children explore ideas, create something of their own, understand customers and experience what it takes to launch.
